الدَّرْسُ الثَّامِنُ وَالْأَرْبَعُونَ
The Unaugmented Triliteral Verb Forms
أَبْوَابُ الثُّلَاثِيِّ الْمُجَرَّدِ
1. نَصَرَ يَنْصُرُ
١- نَصَرَ يَنْصُرُ
Competition: It consists of mentioning a verb after a reciprocal verb in order to show the victory of one of the two participants when they contend, provided that this verb is not an initial-weak verb, a ya-hollow verb, or a ya-defective verb. For example: خَاصَمَنِي زَيْدٌ فَخَصَمْتُهُ, meaning, ‘Zayd contended with me, and I defeated him,’ that is, I prevailed over him in the contention.
2. ضَرَبَ يَضْرِبُ
٢- ضَرَبَ يَضْرِبُ
Competition: When the verb is an initial-weak verb, a ya-hollow verb, or a ya-defective verb, the competitive form is placed in this pattern. For example: بَايَعَنِي زَيْدٌ فَبِعْتُهُ, meaning, ‘Zayd transacted a sale with me, and I outdid him in selling,’ so I surpassed him in the transaction.
الْمُغَالَبَةُ: إِذَا كَانَ الْفِعْلُ مِنَ «الْمِثَالِ، أَوِ الْأَجْوَفِ الْيَائِيِّ، أَوِ النَّاقِصِ الْيَائِيِّ» عِنْدَ الْمُقَابَلَةِ، نَحْوُ: بَايَعَنِي زَيْدٌ فَبِعْتُهُ، فَتَقَدَّمْتُ عَلَيْهِ فِي الْمُبَايَعَةِ.
Benefit
فَائِدَةٌ
In the competitive construction, when the verb is sound, waw-defective, or waw-hollow, it is brought according to نَصَرَ يَنْصُرُ even if its original lexical pattern belongs to another form. For example: يُضَارِبُنِي زَيْدٌ فَأَضْرُبُهُ, meaning, ‘Zayd vies with me in striking, and I defeat him,’ that is, I prevail over him in striking.
3. سَمِعَ يَسْمَعُ
٣- سَمِعَ يَسْمَعُ
Predominant intransitivity: Most verbs of this form are intransitive and become transitive only rarely, as in لَبِسَ يَلْبَسُ. Most verbal nouns from this form denote bodily qualities and states, such as colors, defects, conditions, illnesses, and their opposites.
4. فَتَحَ يَفْتَحُ
٤- فَتَحَ يَفْتَحُ
Its characteristic is verbal, not semantic: every sound verb that occurs in this form must have one of the guttural letters as its second or third radical, as in
Observation
الْمَلْحُوظَةُ
It should be clear that this requirement operates from one direction, not both. In other words, not every sound verb whose second or third radical is a guttural must belong to this form, as shown by دَخَلَ and سَمِعَ. Rather, every sound verb that actually belongs to this form must have a guttural as its second or third radical. As for رَكَنَ يَرْكَنُ and أَبَى يَأْبَى, they are instances of overlap between the verb forms.
5. كَرُمَ يَكْرُمُ
٥- كَرُمَ يَكْرُمُ
Permanent intransitivity: This form is always intransitive. It also contains verbs expressing genuine innate qualities, such as حَسُنَ، صَغُرَ، كَبُرَ, or qualities that were originally accidental but became so firmly established in something that they are as though inherent, such as فَقُهَ and طَهُرَ.
6. حَسِبَ يَحْسِبُ
٦- حَسِبَ يَحْسِبُ
Its characteristic is verbal: only the enumerated verbs occur in this form. Two are sound verbs, namely حَسِبَ and نَعِمَ. Several are initial-weak verbs, namely
