الدَّرْسُ التَّاسِعُ

The Adjective Resembling the Participle, the Noun of Instrument, and the Noun of Place/Time

الصِّفَةُ الْمُشَبَّهَةُ وَاسْمُ الْآلَةِ وَاسْمُ الظَّرْفِ

4. The Adjective Resembling the Participle

٤- الصِّفَةُ الْمُشَبَّهَةُ

It denotes that a subject possesses the meaning of the verbal noun permanently and firmly. The active participle also denotes possession of the quality, but as something occurring and temporary. For this reason the verb from which the adjective resembling the participle is formed is always intransitive, even if it originates from a transitive verb.

The difference between السَّامِع and السَّمِيع is that السَّامِع describes one who hears as an occurrence at a particular time, so it may take an object after it, whereas سَمِيع describes one firmly and permanently characterized by hearing. It is not tied to a particular time or object.

The adjective resembling the participle has many patterns, for example:

5. The Noun of Instrument

٥- اسْمُ الْآلَةِ

It is a derived noun that denotes the instrument by means of which the action is performed. It is formed on three patterns: مِفْعَل, مِفْعَلَة and مِفْعَال.

Sometimes a noun of instrument also occurs on the pattern فَاعِل, such as خَاتَم, an instrument for sealing, and عَالَم, an instrument or sign for knowing. Yet in this category the non-derived nominal meaning has become predominant, so the derivational sense is no longer unrestricted. Thus not every sealing instrument is called خَاتَم, nor every instrument of knowledge عَالَم.

6. The Noun of Place and Time

٦- اسْمُ الظَّرْفِ

It is a derived noun that denotes the place where an action occurs or the time when it occurs. From an unaugmented triliteral present tense whose middle radical is fatḥah or ḍammah, and from a defective verb, it generally comes on the pattern مَفْعَل; when the middle radical of the present tense has kasrah, and in the mithāl type, it generally comes on مَفْعِل.

Some morphologists state that the doubled verb also takes fatḥah in its noun of place/time, citing مَقَرّ. This is not correct. The proper rule is that the middle radical of the doubled verb is kasrah, as in the Qur’anic usage وَلا تَحْلِقُوا رُءُوسَكُمْ حَتَّى يَبْلُغَ الْهَدْيُ مَحِلَّهُ. The word الْمَقَرّ is better regarded not as a noun of place but as a mīmī verbal noun.

The noun of place/time is of two types. The form that denotes a time is called a ظرف زمان, and the form that denotes a place is called a ظرف مكان.
