Lesson Five
الدَّرْسُ الْخَامِسُ
The Present-Tense Verb
الْفِعْلُ الْمُضَارِعُ
The present tense also has fourteen forms.
لِلْمُضَارِعِ أَيْضًا أَرْبَعَ عَشْرَةَ صِيغَةً.
Affirmative Active Present Tense:
The middle radical may carry any of the three vowels, as in the pattern يَفْعَلُ.
بِالْحَرَكَاتِ الثَّلَاثَةِ فِي الْعَيْنِ، مِثْلَ: يَفْعَلُ.
The first three forms are for the absent masculine, followed by three for the absent feminine, then three for the masculine addressee, then three for the feminine addressee. Finally, there are two forms for the speaker: singular, and plural, with the dual included in the plural category for both masculine and feminine.
Note: the form تَفْعَلُ is also used for the masculine addressee, so it is shared by two persons. The form تَفْعَلَانِ stands in place of three forms: the masculine dual addressee, and both the absent and addressed feminine dual.
Affirmative Passive Present Tense:
Negation of the Active Present Tense:
نَفْيُ الْمُضَارِعِ الْمَعْرُوفِ:
لَا يَفْعَلُ، لَا يَفْعَلَانِ، لَا يَفْعَلُونَ … إِلَى آخِرِهِ.
مَا يَفْعَلُ، مَا يَفْعَلَانِ، مَا يَفْعَلُونَ … إِلَى آخِرِهِ.
Negation of the Passive Present Tense:
نَفْيُ الْمُضَارِعِ الْمَجْهُولِ:
لَا يُفْعَلُ، لَا يُفْعَلَانِ، لَا يُفْعَلُونَ … إِلَى آخِرِهِ.
مَا يُفْعَلُ، مَا يُفْعَلَانِ، مَا يُفْعَلُونَ … إِلَى آخِرِهِ.
Explanation of لَنْ and Its Sisters
بَيَانُ «لَنْ» وَأَخَوَاتِهَا
When لَنْ enters upon the present tense, it makes five forms accusative: يَفْعَلُ, تَفْعَلُ, تَفْعَلُ, أَفْعَلُ and نَفْعَلُ. It drops the inflectional nūn from seven forms: the duals, the masculine plurals and the feminine singular addressee among the five verbs. It causes no visible change in يَفْعَلْنَ and تَفْعَلْنَ. In meaning, it turns an affirmative present tense into an emphatically negated future.
Emphatically Negated Active Future with لَنْ:
Emphatically Negated Passive Future with لَنْ:
نَفْيُ الْمُسْتَقْبَلِ الْمَجْهُولِ الْمُؤَكَّدِ بِـ«لَنْ»:
لَنْ يُفْعَلَ، لَنْ يُفْعَلَا، لَنْ يُفْعَلُوا …
Benefit: أَنْ, كَيْ and إِذَنْ also have the same grammatical effect as لَنْ on the wording of the present tense, for example: أَنْ يَفْعَلَ, كَيْ يَفْعَلَ and إِذَنْ يَفْعَلَ, and similarly in the remaining forms.
فَائِدَةٌ: «أَنْ»، وَ«كَيْ»، وَ«إِذَنْ» هَذِهِ الثَّلَاثَةُ أَيْضًا تَعْمَلُ عَمَلَ «لَنْ» لَفْظًا، مِثْلَ: أَنْ يَفْعَلَ … وَكَيْ يَفْعَلَ … وَإِذَنْ يَفْعَلَ … إِلَى آخِرِهِ.
Explanation of لَمْ and Its Sisters
بَيَانُ «لَمْ» وَأَخَوَاتِهَا
It enters upon the present tense and makes five forms jussive: يَفْعَلُ, تَفْعَلُ, تَفْعَلُ, أَفْعَلُ and نَفْعَلُ. It drops the inflectional nūn from seven forms among the five verbs, and causes no change in يَفْعَلْنَ and تَفْعَلْنَ. In meaning, it converts an affirmative present tense into a negated past. For example, لَمْ أَكْتُبْ means, ‘I did not write in the past.’
Past Negation with لَمْ in the Active Present Form:
Past Negation with لَمْ in the Passive Present Form:
نَفْيُ الْجَحْدِ بِـ«لَمْ» فِي الْمُضَارِعِ الْمَجْهُولِ:
لَمْ يُفْعَلْ، لَمْ يُفْعَلَا، لَمْ يُفْعَلُوا …
Explanation of لَمَّا and the Difference Between It and لَمْ
بَيَانُ «لَمَّا» وَالْفَرْقُ بَيْنَهُ وَبَيْنَ «لَمْ»
The word لَمَّا also works like لَمْ in both grammatical effect and general meaning. However, لَمْ يَفْعَلْ means ‘he did not do,’ whereas لَمَّا يَفْعَلْ means ‘he has not done so up to now.’
كَلِمَةُ «لَمَّا» أَيْضًا تَعْمَلُ مِثْلَ «لَمْ» لَفْظًا وَمَعْنًى، لَكِنْ مَعْنَى «لَمْ يَفْعَلْ»: مَا فَعَلَ، وَمَعْنَى «لَمَّا يَفْعَلْ»: مَا فَعَلَ حَتَّى الْآنِ.
Benefit: إِنْ, the lām of command, and the prohibitive لَا also produce the same jussive effect as لَمْ. They are called the sisters of لَمْ. Examples include إِنْ يَفْعَلْ, وَلْيَفْعَلْ and لَا تَفْعَلْ. The lām of command is used with all active forms other than the directly addressed forms, while the prohibitive لَا is used in all forms of prohibition.
Note: according to the explanation of precise scholars of morphology, the forms of command with lām and the forms of prohibition should be mentioned together with the sisters of لَمْ because they share the jussive state. However, the active command addressed directly to the listener must be treated separately for two reasons:
1. Because the command addressed directly to the listener comes without the lām.
١- لِأَنَّ الْأَمْرَ الْحَاضِرَ يَأْتِي بِدُونِ اللَّامِ.
2. Because the imperative is an independent third division of the verb. Therefore, the forms of the command addressed directly to the listener should be written separately. The command with lām is mentioned in its relevant place to preserve the arrangement of the topic, while the forms of prohibition are written here because of their close correspondence with the forms governed by لَمْ.
