الدَّرْسُ الرَّابِعُ وَالْعِشْرُونَ

The Second Part: Conjugation of Hamzated Verbs

الْقِسْمُ الثَّانِي: تَصَارِيفُ الْمَهْمُوزِ

A benefit concerning the imperatives of أَخَذَ, أَكَلَ, and أَمَرَ

فَائِدَةٌ فِي أَمْرِ «أَخَذَ وَأَكَلَ وَأَمَرَ»

The imperatives of akhadha and akala depart from the regular pattern because of frequent usage: khudh and kul. With amara, both omission and retention are possible: mur and uʾmur.

أَمْرُ «أَخَذَ» وَ«أَكَلَ» جَاءَ عَلَى خِلَافِ الْقِيَاسِ لِكَثْرَةِ الِاسْتِعْمَالِ، فَيُقَالُ: خُذْ وَكُلْ. وَفِي «أَمَرَ» يَجُوزُ الْحَذْفُ وَالْإِبْقَاءُ: مُرْ وَأْـمُرْ.

In the conjugations of a verb whose first radical is hamzah, the rules of raʾs, buʾs, dhiʾb, āmana, and awādim are applied according to the position and vowel of the hamzah.

تَجْرِي فِي تَصَارِيفِ مَهْمُوزِ الْفَاءِ قَوَاعِدُ «رَأْسٍ، وَبُؤْسٍ، وَذِئْبٍ، وَآمَنَ، وَأَوَادِمَ» بِحَسَبِ مَوْضِعِ الْهَمْزَةِ وَحَرَكَتِهَا.

A first-radical hamzated verb on the pattern ḍaraba yaḍribu is illustrated by al-asr, imprisonment.

A first-radical hamzated verb in iftiʿāl is exemplified by al-iʾtimār, obedience and compliance; in istifʿāl by al-istiʾdhān, seeking permission.

مَهْمُوزُ الْفَاءِ مِنَ الِافْتِعَالِ: مِثْلُ الِائْتِمَارِ، أَيْ: الِامْتِثَالِ وَالِانْقِيَادِ. وَمِنَ الِاسْتِفْعَالِ: مِثْلُ الِاسْتِئْذَانِ، أَيْ: طَلَبِ الْإِذْنِ.

For a middle-radical hamzated unaugmented triliteral, the between-between rule applies in the past, while the rule of yasʾalu applies in the present and imperative. The hamzat al-waṣl of the imperative then drops after the easing rule is applied.

The middle-radical hamzated verbs of the augmented triliteral patterns follow the same general conjugational treatment. The rule of bayna bayn, however, is not applied to the past-tense forms of certain augmented patterns.

For a final-radical hamzated unaugmented triliteral, the between-between rule applies in the past and present, while the rule of the isolated sakin hamzah applies in the imperative and in jussive present forms.
