The Third Section: Conjugations of the Wāw-Type Hollow Verb

الْقِسْمُ الثَّالِثُ فِي تَصَارِيفِ الْأَجْوَفِ الْوَاوِيِّ

The wāw-type hollow verb from نَصَرَ يَنْصُرُ: an example is الْقَوْلُ, meaning speech.

Iʿlāl: The vowel of the wāw was not transferred to the preceding letter in مِقْوَلٌ and مِقْوَلَةٌ because their original form was مِقْوَالٌ. After the alif was omitted, it became مِقْوَلٌ, and a tā was added to the latter form, making it مِقْوَلَةٌ. In مِقْوَالٌ, however, the vowel of the wāw was not transferred to the preceding letter under Rule 8 because the condition was absent, namely that the wāw occur before an additional long vowel. When the vowel is not transferred in the original form, it is not transferred in its two derivatives.

Iʿlāl: From قَالَ through قَالَتَا, the wāw was changed to alif in accordance with the rule of قَالَ وَبَاعَ (Rule 7). From قُلْنَ to the final form, the wāw was omitted because two quiescent letters came together, and the qāf was given ḍammah to indicate the omitted wāw.

Iʿlāl: The original form of قِيلَ is قُوِلَ. It became قِيلَ in accordance with the rule of قِيلَ وَبِيعَ (Rule 9), and the same applies through قِيلَتَا. From قِلْنَ to the final form, the yā was omitted because two quiescent letters came together, and the qāf was given ḍammah to indicate the omitted wāw.

Iʿlāl: In all these forms, the qāf was quiescent, so the vowel of the wāw was transferred to the qāf in accordance with the rule of يَقُولُ وَيَبِيعُ (Rule 8). In يَقُلْنَ and تَقُلْنَ, the wāw was omitted because two quiescent letters came together.

Iʿlāl: In all these forms, the qāf was quiescent and the wāw carried fatḥah. The vowel of the wāw was therefore transferred to the qāf, and the wāw became alif in accordance with the rule of يُقَالُ وَيُبَاعُ (Rule 8). The alif was then omitted in يُقَلْنَ and تُقَلْنَ because two quiescent letters came together.

No iʿlāl occurs in this discussion other than that which occurs in the present tense.

Iʿlāl: No iʿlāl occurs in this discussion except that the wāw was omitted in لَمْ يَقُلْ and its related forms, and the alif was omitted in لَمْ يُقَلْ and its related forms, because two quiescent letters came together.

In these four conjugations, no iʿlāl occurs other than that which occurs in the present tense.

وَفِي هَذِهِ التَّصَارِيفِ الْأَرْبَعَةِ لَمْ يَقَعْ إِعْلَالٌ غَيْرُ الَّذِي وَقَعَ فِي الْمُضَارِعِ.

بَحْثُ الْأَمْرِ الْحَاضِرِ: قُلْ، قُولَا، قُولُوا، قُولِي، قُولَا، قُلْنَ.

Iʿlāl: The original form of قُلْ is لِتَقُولْ. After the sign of the present tense was omitted, the following letter remained vowelled, so there was no need for the conjunctive hamzah. When the final letter was made quiescent, the wāw was omitted because two quiescent letters came together, making قُلْ. According to some, its original form is أُقْوُلْ. After the vowel of the wāw was transferred to the preceding letter, the wāw was omitted because two quiescent letters came together, and the hamzah was omitted because it was no longer needed, meaning that it had become dispensable. Apply the same principle to the remaining forms of the imperative addressed to the second person. As for the forms of the imperative with lām and the prohibitive, they are like the simple negation with لَمْ: the wāw is omitted from their active forms and the alif from their passive forms solely because two quiescent letters come together, as in لِيَقُلْ، لَا تَقُلْ، لِيُقَلْ, and لَا تُقَلْ. In the imperative and prohibitive forms with the heavy and light nūn, both the wāw in the active and the alif in the passive return because neither meets a quiescent letter.

Apply the conjugation of the light nūn by analogy with this.

Iʿlāl: The original form of قَائِلٌ is قَاوِلٌ. The wāw became hamzah in accordance with the rule of قَائِلٌ وَبَائِعٌ (Rule 17), and the same applies to the other forms.

Iʿlāl: The original form of مَقُولٌ is مَقْوُولٌ. The vowel of the wāw was transferred to the preceding letter in accordance with the rule of يَقُولُ وَيَبِيعُ (Rule 8). The wāw was then omitted because two quiescent letters came together, making مَقُولٌ.

Benefit: People differ over whether the first or the second wāw is omitted from مَقُولٌ and similar forms. Some hold that the second is omitted because it is additional, and an additional letter is more deserving of omission. Others hold that the first is omitted because the second is a marker, and a marker is not omitted. Most morphologists preferred omission of the second. The author, may Allah have mercy on him, prefers omission of the first and says: We have often observed that when two quiescent letters come together, the first is omitted, whether it is additional or radical. This form should therefore not be removed from the pattern of its analogues.

Subtle Point: The practical result of disagreement in cases like these is not outwardly apparent because the word becomes مَقُولٌ under either view. However, Shaykh ʿIṣmat Allāh al-Sahāranfūrī, the author of Sharḥ Khulāṣat al-Ḥisāb, presented an excellent discussion of this issue while explaining whether the word رَحْمَن is declinable or diptotic. He said that the practical result of the disagreement can appear in legal questions in cases such as these. For example:

A. A person swore, “I will not utter an additional wāw today,” and then pronounced مَقُولٌ. He would have broken his oath according to those who hold that the first wāw is omitted, but he would not have broken it according to those who hold that the second is omitted.

B. Or a man said to his wife, “If you utter an additional wāw today, you are divorced.” She then pronounced مَقُولٌ. With first-wāw omission she would be divorced; with second-wāw omission she would not.
