The Unaugmented and Augmented Quadriliteral
الرُّبَاعِيُّ الْمُجَرَّدُ وَالْمَزِيدُ فِيهِ
Having completed the unrestricted augmented triliteral patterns, we now explain the unaugmented and augmented quadriliteral before the annexed patterns, because understanding the annexed patterns depends upon understanding the quadriliteral.
The Unaugmented Quadriliteral: know that the unaugmented quadriliteral has one pattern.
الرُّبَاعِيُّ الْمُجَرَّدُ: اعْلَمْ أَنَّ لِلرُّبَاعِيِّ الْمُجَرَّدِ بَابًا وَاحِدًا:
The فَعْلَلَة Pattern
“الْفَعْلَلَةُ”:
An example is الْبَعْثَرَة, meaning stirring up or scattering. Its sign is that the past tense consists of four original root letters.
General Rule for the Vowel of the Present-Tense Prefix
قَاعِدَةٌ كُلِّيَّةٌ لِحَرَكَةِ عَلَامَةِ الْمُضَارِعِ
If the past tense has four letters, whether original or added, the prefix of the present tense always carries ḍammah, as in يُبَعْثِرُ, يُكْرِمُ, يُصَرِّفُ, and يُقَاتِلُ. Otherwise it carries fatḥah, as in يَنْصُرُ, يَجْتَنِبُ, and يَتَقَابَلُ.
The augmented quadriliteral is of two types: one without hamzat al-waṣl and one with hamzat al-waṣl.
الرُّبَاعِيُّ الْمَزِيدُ فِيهِ: وَهُوَ إِمَّا أَنْ يَكُونَ بِدُونِ هَمْزَةِ الْوَصْلِ، أَوْ مَعَ هَمْزَةِ الْوَصْلِ.
The first type has one pattern.
فَلِلْأَوَّلِ بَابٌ وَاحِدٌ:
The التَّفَعْلُل Pattern
“التَّفَعْلُلُ”:
Its sign is a regularly added tāʾ before four original root letters, as in التَّسَرْبُل, meaning wearing a shirt.
The second type has two patterns.
وَلِلنَّوْعِ الثَّانِي بَابَانِ.
First: الِافْعِلَال
الْبَابُ الْأَوَّلُ “الِافْعِلَالُ”:
Its sign is a doubled second lām added to the four original letters, together with hamzat al-waṣl in the past tense and imperative. An example is الِاقْشِعْرَار, meaning the hair standing on the body from fear.
Change: اِقْشَعَرَّ and يَقْشَعِرُّ were originally اِقْشَعْرَرَ and يَقْشَعْرِرُ. The other forms of this pattern undergo assimilation in the same way as الِاحْمِرَار. The difference between the two is that here the letter preceding the two identical letters was sākin. We therefore transferred the vowel of the first identical letter to the preceding letter, changing اِقْشَعْرَرَ to اِقْشَعَرْرَ, and then assimilated the two letters, producing اِقْشَعَرَّ.
Second: الِافْعَنْلَال
الْبَابُ الثَّانِي “الِافْعَنْلَالُ”:
Its sign is an added nūn after the middle radical and hamzat al-waṣl in the past tense and imperative, as in الِابْرِنْشَاق, meaning joy and happiness.
