Lesson Twenty-Six

الدَّرْسُ السَّادِسُ وَالْعِشْرُونَ

Rules of the Hollow Verb

قَوَاعِدُ الْأَجْوَفِ

  1. The rule of قَالَ and بَاعَ

٧- قَاعِدَةُ قَالَ وَبَاعَ

A moving waw or ya preceded by fatḥah is changed to alif, subject to conditions. Among them are that the weak letter not be the first radical, not be the middle of a lafif root, not precede an added long vowel, not precede a doubled ya or emphatic nun, not occur in one of the exceptional noun patterns, and not occur in an iftiʿāl form carrying the meaning of mutual action.

The waw of the masculine plural and the ya of the feminine addressee function as separate pronominal elements, so they do not count as an added long vowel. The vowel change therefore applies, after which the resulting alif may be deleted because two sakin letters meet.

If a sakin letter or the feminine past-tense ta follows the substituted alif, the alif is deleted.

إِذَا وَقَعَ بَعْدَ الْأَلِفِ الْمُبْدَلَةِ سَاكِنٌ أَوْ تَاءُ تَأْنِيثِ الْمَاضِي حُذِفَتِ الْأَلِفُ.

  1. The rule of يَقُولُ and يَبِيعُ

٨- قَاعِدَةُ يَقُولُ وَيَبِيعُ

When a moving waw or ya is preceded by a sound sakin consonant, its vowel is transferred to the preceding consonant, subject to the rule’s conditions. If another sakin follows, the weak letter is deleted; ḍammah indicates an omitted waw, kasrah an omitted ya, and fatḥah an alif.

Note on the preceding weak-letter rule: each of its stated conditions excludes particular examples. The rule therefore does not operate where one of those conditions is absent. Likewise, it does not apply to the comparative/superlative, the two exclamatory verbs, or the annexed patterns.
