Lesson Fifteen
الدَّرْسُ الْخَامِسُ عَشَرَ
Fifth Pattern: al-Ifʿīlāl
الْبَابُ الْخَامِسُ “الاِفْعِيلَالُ”:
Its sign is the repetition of the final radical together with an added alif before the first of the two final radicals; in the verbal noun that alif becomes yāʾ. An example is الاِدْهِيمَامُ, meaning intense blackness or becoming very black.
Benefit: Assimilation occurs in the forms of this pattern just as it occurs in the ifʿilāl pattern, and the assimilation in each form corresponds to its counterpart. These two patterns most commonly convey colour or bodily defect, and both are always intransitive.
Sixth Pattern: al-Ifʿīʿāl
الْبَابُ السَّادِسُ “الاِفْعِيعَالُ”:
Its sign is the repetition of the middle radical with a wāw between the two occurrences in the verbal noun. That wāw is changed to yāʾ because of the kasrah before it. An example is الاِخْشِيشَانُ, the opposite of softness, meaning for something to become very rough.
Generally this pattern is intransitive, though it may sometimes be transitive, as in اِحْلَوْلَيْتُهُ, meaning ‘I considered it sweet’, and اِعْرَوْرَيْتُهُ, meaning ‘I rode the horse while it was bareback’.
وَعَامَّةً يَأْتِي هَذَا الْبَابُ لَازِمًا، وَأَحْيَانًا يَكُونُ مُتَعَدِّيًا، مِثْلُ: اِحْلَوْلَيْتُهُ، أَيْ حَسِبْتُهُ حُلْوًا، وَاِعْرَوْرَيْتُهُ، أَيْ رَكِبْتُ الْفَرَسَ حَالَ كَوْنِهِ عُرْيَانًا.
Seventh Pattern: al-Ifʿiwwāl. Its sign is a doubled wāw after the middle radical. This pattern is an independent formation, such as الاِحْلِوَّاذُ, meaning: running.
