الدَّرْسُ الثَّلَاثُونَ

The Second Part: Conjugation of Assimilated Verbs

الْقِسْمُ الثَّانِي: فِي تَصَارِيفِ الْمِثَالِ

A waw-initial assimilated verb on the pattern ḍaraba yaḍribu is illustrated by waʿada, to promise.

الْمِثَالُ الْوَاوِيُّ مِنْ «ضَرَبَ يَضْرِبُ»: مِثْلُ الْوَعْدِ.

وَعَدَ، يَعِدُ، وَعْدًا، فَهُوَ وَاعِدٌ؛ وُعِدَ، يُوعَدُ، وَعْدًا، فَذَاكَ مَوْعُودٌ؛ الْأَمْرُ: عِدْ؛ النَّهْيُ: لَا تَعِدْ.

The initial waw drops in the present and imperative according to the rule of yaʿidu. The rule of ʿidah applies to a verbal noun of that pattern, and the rule of miʿad to the relevant derived nouns.

تَسْقُطُ الْوَاوُ فِي الْمُضَارِعِ وَالْأَمْرِ عَلَى قَاعِدَةِ «يَعِدُ»، وَتُرَاعَى قَاعِدَةُ «عِدَةٍ» فِي الْمَصْدَرِ إِذَا جَاءَ عَلَى وَزْنِهَا، وَقَاعِدَةُ «مِيعَادٍ» فِي الْأَسْمَاءِ الْمُنَاسِبَةِ.

A ya-initial assimilated verb generally retains its original form, except where earlier rules require ya to change to waw.

الْمِثَالُ الْيَائِيُّ يُصَرَّفُ عَلَى الْأَصْلِ غَالِبًا، وَيَجْرِي فِيهِ قَلْبُ الْيَاءِ وَاوًا فِي الْمَوَاضِعِ الَّتِي يَقْتَضِيهَا مَا سَبَقَ مِنَ الْقَوَاعِدِ.

Examples of waw-initial assimilated roots occur on samiʿa yasmaʿu, such as wajal; on fataḥa yaftaḥu, such as hibah; and on ḥasiba yaḥsibu, such as wamq and miqah.

الْمِثَالُ الْوَاوِيُّ مِنْ «سَمِعَ يَسْمَعُ»: مِثْلُ الْوَجَلِ، وَمِنْ «فَتَحَ يَفْتَحُ»: مِثْلُ الْهِبَةِ. وَمِنْ «حَسِبَ يَحْسِبُ»: مِثْلُ الْوَمْقِ وَالْمِقَةِ.

In iftiʿāl, examples are al-ittiqad from a waw-root and al-ittisar from a ya-root, in which the first radical changes to ta and assimilates. Related augmented forms include al-istīqad and al-īqad.
