The First Division: Rules of the Weak Verb

الْقِسْمُ الْأَوَّلُ فِي قَوَاعِدِ الْمُعْتَلِّ

1. The Rule of يَعِدُ

١- قَاعِدَةُ يَعِدُ

Every wāw, when it occurs between the open present-tense prefix and a kasrah without restriction, or a fatḥah occurring in a verb whose middle or final radical is one of the guttural letters, is obligatorily dropped, for example:

Note: As for those who explain this rule as operating originally between the yā, which is the present-tense prefix, and the kasrah, and who make the remaining forms subordinate to the first, all of this is needless prolixity. The same applies to the statement regarding يَهَبُ: that its middle radical originally bore kasrah, يَهِبُ, but they made it open out of consideration for a guttural letter. This is pure contrivance, and the correct view is what we have stated.

2. The Rule of عِدَةٌ

٢- قَاعِدَةُ عِدَةٍ

When wāw occurs as the first radical of a verbal noun whose pattern is فِعْلٌ, it is obligatorily dropped, the middle radical is given kasrah, and it is sometimes given fatḥah when its present tense has an open middle radical. A tā is added at the end in compensation for the wāw, for example: عِدَةٌ، زِنَةٌ، سِعَةٌ، وَسَعَةٌ. Their original forms were

3. The Rule of مِيعَادٌ, مُوسِرٌ, and قُوتِلَ

٣- قَاعِدَةُ مِيعَادٍ وَمُوسِرٍ وَقُوتِلَ

Every quiescent, unassimilated wāw, when it occurs after kasrah, becomes yā, for example: مِيعَادٌ from مِوْعَادٌ, but not اِجْلِوَّاذٌ because of assimilation. A quiescent, unassimilated yā, when it occurs after ḍammah, becomes wāw, for example: مُوسِرٌ from مُيْسِرٌ, but not مُيَسَّرٌ because of assimilation. An alif after ḍammah becomes wāw, for example: قُوتِلَ; and after kasrah it becomes yā, for example: مَحَارِيبُ.

4. The Rule of اِتَّقَدَ and اتَّسَرَ

٤- قَاعِدَةُ اِتَّقَدَ وَاتَّسَرَ

If the first radical of the iftiʿāl pattern is an original wāw or yā, meaning that neither has been changed from hamzah, each is changed to tā and then obligatorily assimilated into the tā of the iftiʿāl pattern, for example: اِتَّقَدَ and اتَّسَرَ from اِوْتَقَدَ and اِيْتَسَرَ.

5. The Rule of أُجُوهٌ and إِشَاحٌ

٥- قَاعِدَةُ أُجُوهٍ وَإِشَاحٍ

If a wāw bears ḍammah or kasrah at the beginning of a word, or bears ḍammah in its middle, it may be replaced with hamzah, for example: أُجُوهٌ، إِشَاحٌ، أُقِّتَ، أُدْعُرُ from وُجُوهٌ، وِشَاحٌ، وُقِّتَ، وُدْعُرُ. As for an open wāw, replacing it with hamzah is irregular, for example: أَحَدٌ from وَحَدٌ, and أَنَاةٌ from وَنَاةٌ.

6. The Rule of أَوَاصِلُ and أُوَيْصِلُ

٦- قَاعِدَةُ أَوَاصِلَ وَأُوَيْصِلَ

When two moving wāws come together at the beginning of a word, the first is obligatorily replaced with hamzah, for example: أَوَاصِلُ and أُوَيْصِلُ. Their original forms were وَوَاصِلُ and وُوَيْصِلُ. وَوَاصِلُ is the plural of وَاصِلَةٌ, and وُوَيْصِلُ is the diminutive of وَاصِلٌ.
