Chapter One: Conjugation of Verbs

الْفَصْلُ الْأَوَّلُ فِي تَصَارِيفِ الْأَفْعَالِ

A. The active past tense of the unaugmented triliteral verb occurs on three patterns:

أ- الْفِعْلُ الْمَاضِي الْمَعْرُوفُ يَأْتِي مِنَ الثُّلَاثِيِّ الْمُجَرَّدِ عَلَى ثَلَاثَةِ أَوْزَانٍ:

1. فَعَلَ, such as ضَرَبَ.

١- «فَعَلَ»، مِثْلُ: ضَرَبَ.

2. فَعِلَ, such as سَمِعَ.

٢- «فَعِلَ»، مِثْلُ: سَمِعَ.

3. فَعُلَ, such as كَرُمَ.

٣- «فَعُلَ»، مِثْلُ: كَرُمَ.

B. As for the active present/future tense:

ب- وَالْمُضَارِعُ الْمَعْرُوفُ:

1. Sometimes فَعَلَ forms its present/future tense on the pattern يَفْعِلُ, such as ضَرَبَ يَضْرِبُ.

١- تَارَةً يَأْتِي مِنْ «فَعَلَ» عَلَى وَزْنِ «يَفْعِلُ»، مِثْلُ: ضَرَبَ يَضْرِبُ.

2. Sometimes فَعَلَ forms it on the pattern يَفْعُلُ, such as نَصَرَ يَنْصُرُ.

٢- وَتَارَةً يَأْتِي مِنْ «فَعَلَ» عَلَى وَزْنِ «يَفْعُلُ»، مِثْلُ: نَصَرَ يَنْصُرُ.

3. Sometimes فَعَلَ forms it on the pattern يَفْعَلُ, such as فَتَحَ يَفْتَحُ.

٣- وَتَارَةً يَأْتِي مِنْ «فَعَلَ» عَلَى وَزْنِ «يَفْعَلُ»، مِثْلُ: فَتَحَ يَفْتَحُ.

4. فَعِلَ sometimes forms its present/future tense on the pattern يَفْعَلُ, such as سَمِعَ يَسْمَعُ.

٤- وَمِنْ «فَعِلَ» تَارَةً يَأْتِي عَلَى وَزْنِ «يَفْعَلُ»، مِثْلُ: سَمِعَ يَسْمَعُ.

5. فَعِلَ sometimes forms it on the pattern يَفْعِلُ, such as حَسِبَ يَحْسِبُ.

٥- وَتَارَةً يَأْتِي مِنْ «فَعِلَ» عَلَى وَزْنِ «يَفْعِلُ»، مِثْلُ: حَسِبَ يَحْسِبُ.

6. فَعُلَ forms its present/future tense only on the pattern يَفْعُلُ, such as كَرُمَ يَكْرُمُ.

٦- وَمِنْ «فَعُلَ» يَأْتِي عَلَى وَزْنِ «يَفْعُلُ» فَقَطْ، مِثْلُ: كَرُمَ يَكْرُمُ.

C. The passive past tense of the unaugmented triliteral verb always occurs only on the pattern فُعِلَ.

ج- وَالْمَاضِي الْمَجْهُولُ دَائِمًا يَأْتِي مِنَ الثُّلَاثِيِّ الْمُجَرَّدِ عَلَى وَزْنِ «فُعِلَ» فَقَطْ.

D. The passive present/future tense occurs only on the pattern يُفْعَلُ. From this explanation, the six conjugational classes (abwāb) of the unaugmented triliteral verb are obtained.

د- وَالْمُضَارِعُ الْمَجْهُولُ يَأْتِي عَلَى وَزْنِ «يُفْعَلُ» فَقَطْ، فَتَحَصَّلَتْ مِنْ هَذَا الْبَيَانِ لِلثُّلَاثِيِّ الْمُجَرَّدِ سِتَّةُ أَبْوَابٍ.

We shall therefore first mention the forms of the verbs and derived nouns, and then discuss the conjugational classes in detail.

فَسَوْفَ نَذْكُرُ صِيَغَ الْأَفْعَالِ وَالْمُشْتَقَّاتِ أَوَّلًا، وَالْأَبْوَابَ بِالتَّفْصِيلِ ثَانِيًا.

The Past Tense

الْفِعْلُ الْمَاضِي

Affirmative Active Past Tense

إِثْبَاتُ الْفِعْلِ الْمَاضِي الْمَعْرُوفِ

فَعَلَ، فَعَلَا، فَعَلُوا، فَعَلَتْ، فَعَلَتَا، فَعَلْنَ، فَعَلْتَ، فَعَلْتُمَا، فَعَلْتُمْ، فَعَلْتِ، فَعَلْتُمَا، فَعَلْتُنَّ، فَعَلْتُ، فَعَلْنَا.

The pattern may occur with the three vowelings: fatḥah, ḍammah, and kasrah, as represented by the pattern فَعَلَ.

بِالْحَرَكَاتِ الثَّلَاثَةِ: الْفَتْحَةِ، وَالضَّمَّةِ، وَالْكَسْرَةِ، نَحْوُ: فَعَلَ.

The past tense has fourteen forms. The first three are for the third-person masculine, the next three for the third-person feminine, the next three for the second-person masculine, and the next three for the second-person feminine. The final two are for the speaker: singular, and plural, with the dual included for both masculine and feminine.

Note: فَعَلْتُمَا is used for the dual of both masculine and feminine addressees; it therefore serves in place of two separate forms, one masculine and one feminine.

الْمَلْحُوظَةُ: «فَعَلْتُمَا» صِيغَةٌ تَأْتِي لِتَثْنِيَةِ الْمُذَكَّرِ وَالْمُؤَنَّثِ الْحَاضِرَيْنِ؛ فَإِنَّهَا قَائِمَةٌ مَقَامَ الصِّيغَتَيْنِ «الْمُذَكَّرِ وَالْمُؤَنَّثِ».

Explanation of “mā” and “lā”

بَيَانُ «مَا» وَ«لَا»

“Mā” and “lā” are used for negation in the past tense. However, the particle “lā” does not occur in this usage without repetition, as in the statement of Allah Most High: “For he neither affirmed the truth nor prayed.”

«مَا» وَ«لَا» تَأْتِيَانِ لِلنَّفْيِ فِي الْمَاضِي، وَلَكِنْ لَا يَأْتِي حَرْفُ «لَا» بِدُونِ التَّكْرَارِ، مِثْلُ قَوْلِهِ تَعَالَى: ﴿فَلَا صَدَّقَ وَلَا صَلَّى﴾.
