Lesson Fourteen

Lesson Fourteen

الدَّرْسُ الرَّابِعُ عَشَرَ

Second Pattern: al-Istifʿāl

الْبَابُ الثَّانِي “الاِسْتِفْعَالُ”:

Its sign is the addition of sīn and tāʾ before the first radical. An example is الاِسْتِنْصَارُ, meaning: seeking assistance.

Benefit: The tāʾ in “اِسْتَطَاعَ يَسْتَطِيعُ” may be omitted for ease, as occurs in the Wise Revelation: “So they were unable to scale it, nor were they able to pierce it” (al-Kahf: 97), and “That is the interpretation of what you could not bear patiently” (al-Kahf: 82).

Third Pattern: al-Infiʿāl

الْبَابُ الثَّالِثُ “الاِنْفِعَالُ”:

Its sign is the addition of nūn before the first radical. This pattern is always intransitive. An example is الاِنْفِطَارُ, meaning: splitting.

Benefit: No verb belonging to this pattern has nūn as its first radical. When the meaning of infiʿāl is required from such a root, the iftiʿāl pattern is used, as in اِنْتَكَسَ, meaning: he was overturned onto his head.

فَائِدَةٌ: لَا يَأْتِي مِنْ هَذَا الْبَابِ فِعْلٌ تَكُونُ فَاؤُهُ نُونًا، وَحِينَمَا يُرَادُ مَعْنَى الاِنْفِعَالِ مِنْهُ فَيُؤْتَى مِنَ الاِفْتِعَالِ، مِثْلُ: اِنْتَكَسَ، أَيْ نُكِسَ عَلَى رَأْسِهِ.

Fourth Pattern: al-Ifʿilāl

الْبَابُ الرَّابِعُ “الاِفْعِلَالُ”:

Its sign is the repetition of the final radical and the presence of four letters after hamzat al-waṣl in the past tense. An example is الاِحْمِرَارُ, meaning: a thing being red.

Morphological change: “اِحْمَرَّ” was originally “اِحْمَرَرَ”. Two homogeneous letters came together in one word, so the first was made quiescent and assimilated into the second, becoming “اِحْمَرَّ”. The same applies to “يَحْمَرُّ”, “مُحْمَرٌّ”, and their related forms.

Rule: When two quiescent letters meet in the masculine singular imperative because of pausing, three forms are permissible:

Note: The letter representing the final radical in the ifʿilāl pattern is always doubled, as in اِحْمَرَّ يَحْمَرُّ, except in a defective verb, such as اِرْعَوَى from اِرْعَوَوَ. It is treated according to the rules of the lafīf verb: the first wāw remains unchanged, while the changes of the defective verb are applied to the second.
